Sometimes you don't need a full desktop publishing suite. You just need to make a PDF small enough to send, reduce the dimensions of an oversized photograph, or convert an image into a more practical format.

PDF files
Large PDFs are often caused by high-resolution photographs, scanned pages and other embedded images. PDF compression attempts to reduce that data while preserving the document itself.
How much a document can be reduced depends heavily on what is inside it. A scan containing hundreds of photographs may shrink dramatically, while a document that is already optimized may change very little.
Images
Modern phones and cameras can produce photographs thousands of pixels wide. That resolution is useful for printing and editing but is often unnecessary for websites, email and everyday sharing.
Reducing an image's pixel dimensions can dramatically reduce its file size while retaining more than enough detail for its intended use. QuakeStar's Image Resizer lets you set maximum dimensions, preserve the image's aspect ratio and choose an output format.

Understand the settings before you use them
Compression and resizing involve trade-offs. A smaller file isn't automatically a better file.
Extreme PDF compression can noticeably reduce the quality of photographs and scanned pages. Reducing a 4,000-pixel photograph to 800 pixels makes it much smaller, but it also removes detail that cannot simply be recovered later.

- Do I need an account?
- No. QuakeStar's current file tools do not require you to create an account.
- How long are uploaded files retained?
- Uploaded files are automatically deleted after 30 minutes.
- Why didn't my PDF get much smaller?
- Some PDFs are already highly compressed. Documents containing mostly text and vector graphics may have much less removable data than documents containing large photographs or scanned pages.
- Will resizing an image make it blurry?
- It can if you make the image much smaller and later attempt to enlarge it again. For normal web and email use, reducing an oversized photograph to appropriate dimensions can substantially decrease file size without a noticeable loss of quality at the intended display size.
- Should I use JPEG, PNG or WebP?
- It depends on the image. JPEG is commonly suitable for photographs. PNG is useful when lossless reproduction or transparency is important. WebP can provide excellent compression for web use. Our image-format guide explains the differences in more detail.
